The widespread dissemination of misinformation across social media platforms presents a profound challenge to public discourse, democratic processes, and collective societal knowledge. While platforms and users frequently attempt to correct false claims, the efficacy of these corrections in prompting genuine belief revision remains highly variable. This paper investigates the mechanisms of belief revision by examining the intersection of misinformation correction cues and social legitimacy within online discussions. Drawing upon cognitive psychology and communication theory, the study explores how the structural characteristics of correction cues interacting with the perceived social legitimacy of the correcting agent influence a user's willingness to update their pre-existing beliefs. Through a comprehensive observational analysis of simulated social media interactions, this research systematically measures how varying levels of consensus, source credibility, and platform-mediated warnings impact cognitive flexibility. The findings demonstrate that correction cues are significantly more effective when accompanied by high social legitimacy, which serves to reduce the cognitive dissonance and defensive motivated reasoning typically triggered by contradictory information. These insights provide a critical framework for designing more effective intervention strategies on digital platforms, suggesting that socio-structural factors are just as crucial as factual accuracy in the battle against digital misinformation.References
